The story of our 1,000 oak trees

From acorns to acres of planted saplings!

The Beginning…

Back in late spring 2020 there was a national story about a tree nursery having to chuck out many thousands of oaks if they were not bought in the next week. This came about because they had increased numbers in line with government advice, but the market had not developed as much as was suggested.

Chew Valley Plants Trees were just forming but the timing felt perfect so we had a whip-round and bought 1000 oak whips for just £300. Luckily we had a great site to keep them until winter.

When they arrived in June, volunteers made a holding bed for them and kept watering them over the summer that hot dry summer where they were kept snug and happy, until we found them more permanent homes.

We are pleased to say that all 1000 oaks have now been planted in the Chew Valley, thanks to you offering your land and/or your services as planters. With a bit of TLC they will still be there for our great-great-great-great grandchildren to see. Many people also offered donations to help us acquire the next set of trees to plant.

If you live in the Chew Valley and have a site suitable for trees to be planted then please fill in our pledge form below and we will be in touch to plan for the next planting season.
